Policy Development
Policy development
This policy has been developed in consultation with staff, pupils, parents and carers. The consultation and policy development process involved the following steps:
- Review – a member of staff or working group pulled together all relevant information including relevant national and local guidance.
- Staff consultation – governors and all school staff were given the opportunity to look at the policy and make recommendations.
- Parent/stakeholder consultation – parents/carers and any interested parties were asked to view the curriculum and draft policy and provide feedback via a questionnaire. Parents/carers will be offered the opportunity to attend a meeting following the initial consultation to discuss concerns raised.
- Pupil consultation – we investigated what exactly pupils want from their RSE
- Ratification – once amendments were made, the policy was shared with governors and ratified
Policy Development
This Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) policy has been developed in consultation with staff, pupils, parents and carers and reflects the statutory requirements and guidance effective from September 2026. As an academy trust, we are committed to working in partnership with our school community to ensure that our RSHE provision is inclusive, age‑appropriate and meets the needs of our pupils and families.
The consultation and policy development process included the following steps:
Review
A member of staff and/or working group reviewed all relevant information, including current and revised national statutory guidance, trust expectations, and local context. This process ensured that the policy aligns with the revised RSHE statutory guidance effective from September 2026.
Staff and Governor Consultation
School staff and governors were given the opportunity to review the draft policy and curriculum content and to make recommendations. This ensured that the policy reflects professional expertise, safeguarding responsibilities and the school’s wider curriculum intent.
Parent and Stakeholder Consultation
Parents and carers were invited to review the proposed RSHE curriculum and draft policy and provide feedback via an online questionnaire. In addition, parents and carers were offered the opportunity to attend consultation meetings, both face‑to‑face and online.
These sessions enabled open and informative discussions about how RSHE will be delivered at Millbrook Primary School and Nursery from September 2026. Feedback highlighted the importance of clarity around the revised RSHE policy, age‑appropriate delivery and clear communication with parents, all of which have been taken into account within this policy.
Pupil Consultation
Pupil voice activities were used to explore pupils’ understanding, questions and views around relationships, wellbeing and personal development. This helped ensure that the curriculum and policy respond to pupils’ needs in an appropriate and supportive way.
Ratification
Following consultation and amendments, the final version of the policy will be shared with governors for approval and formally ratified. The policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure continued compliance with statutory guidance and to reflect ongoing feedback from the school community.
