Intent

At Millbrook Primary School, our Music curriculum is a powerful vehicle for celebrating our unique and diverse community and cultivating empathy within it. We aim to build empathy by exposing pupils to a vast repertoire of musical styles, experiences, cultures, and histories. The children gain inspiration from representation of role models that celebrate the diversity within music.

The curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity about the structure of music and empower every child to pursue their individual interests through creativity in composition and performance. Ultimately, we seek to cultivate respect for the art form and ensure all pupils reach their full potential as musicians and critical listeners, fostering a lifelong learning journey.

During their time at Millbrook Primary School, our children will be exposed to a high-quality music education which will include weekly music assemblies which link to relevant curriculum topics and cultural celebrations.  We seek out opportunities for all pupils to flourish in music lessons that are inclusive and ensure every child feels valued and respected. In music lessons, children will have the opportunity to listen to and appraise a wide range of music. Children will be given opportunity to use a range of instruments to create and perform pieces of music with. By taking a practical approach to their learning, we prepare the children to develop a love for the subject.  This practical engagement will equip pupils with the skills to both understand and contribute to the diverse cultural life of the wider community, reinforcing their sense of belonging.

Implementation

During their time at Millbrook Primary School, our children will be exposed to a high-quality music education which will include weekly music/singing assemblies that are tailored to key stage expectations. We seek out opportunities for all pupils to flourish in music lessons that are inclusive and ensure every child feels valued and respected. Children will be given the opportunity to learn an instrument capably by the time they leave school whilst also being exposed to a variety of instruments. This will include working with other pupils to develop a confidence and love of music through a diverse curriculum. Through this, children will be exposed to a multitude of genres in which to explore cultural traditions and gain an understanding of music’s place in the world.
